Boniface in Contention to Feature vs St. Pauli Despite Missed Training
Werder Bremen have been handed a timely boost ahead of their Bundesliga home match against St. Pauli, as Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface is expected to be available despite skipping training on Thursday.
The 24 year old had been rested as a precaution after suffering a minor foot knock earlier in the week. Coach Horst Steffen clarified that his absence from training was part of a load management approach, designed to safeguard his condition for Saturday’s game.
Steffen reassured fans that Boniface is slated to return to training on Friday, barring any setbacks, and should be available for selection against St. Pauli.
His possible inclusion is significant for both his club and the Super Eagles. Boniface’s form and fitness are under close scrutiny ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
The striker has recorded one assist in three Bundesliga appearances for Werder Bremen this season, and though he was named in Nigeria’s provisional squad for September’s internationals, he did not make the final cut.
Editorial
We welcome the news of Boniface’s potential return as a showing of prudence, not risk. In modern football, especially for youngsters with dual obligations to club and country, careful management of minor injuries can make the difference between form and fatigue. Steffen’s decision to rest him, rather than force him into training, reflects an understanding that long-term fitness can outweigh a single match.
That said, Boniface must prove his readiness quickly. Match rhythm, sharpness, and the capacity to perform under pressure do not immediately restore themselves after even short absences. His handling of the training sessions, warm-ups, and early minutes will tell whether the rest was effective or if he returns sluggish.
For Nigeria, Boniface’s fitness carries extra weight.
