Mikel Criticizes Late National Team Switches in Dual Nationality Debate

Retired Nigeria international John Obi Mikel has weighed in on the dual nationality debate, criticizing players who prioritize representing other countries over their African nation until late in their careers. Mikel’s comments come in the wake of a racism controversy involving Argentine players mocking France's African-eligible players during the Copa America celebrations.

Mikel criticized players who wait until they are in their late twenties or early thirties, and after failing to secure a spot with their preferred national teams, opt to play for their African country. He emphasized that African countries should not be treated as second options.

Mikel cited Newcastle United legend Shola Ameobi, who initially chose to represent England but switched to Nigeria at almost 30, only to play briefly for the Super Eagles. The Super Eagles have seen similar situations with players like Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman, who initially played for England’s U20 team before switching to Nigeria in 2022.

Mikel's remarks highlight the pride and priority that should be associated with representing one's African nation from the outset of a player's career.

Editorial

John Obi Mikel’s recent comments on the dual nationality debate bring to light an important issue facing African football. His critique of players who treat their African nationality as a fallback option speaks to a broader conversation about national pride and commitment. We support Mikel's stance that representing one's country should be a matter of pride and not a last resort.
